Search a surname, see your heritage
Many Scottish surnames trace back to a clan, and many clans have their own tartans. Our Find Your Clan tool will let you type in a surname and see the connections in one clear place: the clan name, its motto, its historic region and the tartans associated with it, wherever the records support it.
If you know the name but not the clan, this does the matching for you, which is especially handy when you are buying from outside Scotland.
Not sure of the link? Septs explained
A sept is a family or surname historically tied to a larger clan, through kinship, territory, allegiance or simply a change of spelling over the centuries. It is how names that look unrelated can still share a clan. Sept records vary between sources, so the finder is built carefully to guide you without overpromising a perfect answer for every name.
